HIV/AIDS
prevention and Care In Kenya HIV/AIDS is currently the biggest
challenge in health and social sector and the prevalence rates are reaching
disastrous proportion. The HIV prevalence increased from 5% in 1993 to about
14% in 1998 with significant gains being witnessed by 2004 where the prevalence
reduced to 6.7%. Unfortunately the prevalence in 2007 has raised to 7.8%,
attributed to improvement in availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and
lack of prevention strategies to those who have benefited from treatment. This
is a grey area which needs a lot of attention to prevent new infections. An
estimated 2 million Kenyans are currently living with the virus while 500-600
people are dying of it every day. HIV/AIDS patients occupy 50% of beds in major
health institutions. Volunteers will have an opportunity to
work directly with the rural community and HIV/AIDS patients to raise awareness
of counseling and testing services, availability of ART and opportunistic
infection while prioritizing prevention education especially among those who
have benefited from ART and sex workers. The volunteer will also assist the
AIDS patients through home based care and nutritional counseling. S/he will
also assist educating/training in model farms to increase food sustainability.
Medical training is not a requirement but the volunteer should be caring, open to
share new ideas of prevention and motivated to assist AIDS patients. Those with
basic HIV/AIDS and healthcare background including medical professionals are
welcomed to apply. 3.
